Scaleway is an excellent hosting provider. Not a managed service provider.

Scaleway provides high-performance Elastic Metal servers, a sovereign cloud, and reliable object storage. But once your instance is delivered, you are responsible for everything running on it.

S What Scaleway does

  • Provide hardware (Elastic Metal, instances, storage)
  • Ensure network connectivity and power supply
  • Replace faulty hardware (bare-metal)
  • Technical support for the Scaleway platform

! What Scaleway does NOT do

  • Monitor your services (Apache, Nginx, PostgreSQL, Redis...)
  • Apply OS security updates
  • Manage and test your application backups
  • Call you at 3am when your app crashes

In short: Scaleway handles the physical infrastructure. Everything above that — OS, services, security, backups, application availability — is your responsibility. Or your managed service provider's.

What RDEM Systems does on your Scaleway servers

24/7 proactive monitoring

Continuous monitoring of your Elastic Metal servers and cloud instances: CPU, RAM, disk, network, application services. Automated alerts with immediate response.

Security updates

Regular patch management: OS, packages, critical CVEs. Your Scaleway servers stay up to date and protected without you having to think about it.

Supervised backups

Configuration, monitoring, and restore testing of your backups. Compatible with Scaleway Object Storage, snapshots, and third-party solutions. For an off-Scaleway copy, see our offsite Proxmox backup pricing.

On-call support: 4h / 1h response time

Guaranteed response within 4 hours (or 1 hour for critical infrastructure), 24/7/365. PagerDuty, automatic escalations, systematic post-mortems. How our on-call rotation works in practice: shared across the managed Scaleway fleet, so you get a permanent team without paying for a dedicated full-time engineer. To compare with an internal rotation, see our guide to outsourcing on-call.

Operational Maintenance

Continuous preventive maintenance: log rotation, performance optimization, cleanup, TLS certificate renewal.

Full Scaleway stack

Elastic Metal, DEV1/GP1/PRO2 instances, Object Storage, Kubernetes Kapsule, managed databases: we monitor your entire stack.

Scaleway products we manage

Elastic Metal (Bare-Metal)

High-performance dedicated servers. We manage the OS, services, monitoring, and on-call support. Ideal for intensive workloads: databases, compute, virtualization.

Cloud Instances (DEV1, GP1, PRO2, POP2)

Scaleway virtual instances. Resource monitoring, scaling, updates. Perfect for web applications, APIs, microservices.

Object Storage & Block Storage

Quota monitoring, capacity alerts, IAM access control, availability and performance monitoring for your buckets.

Kubernetes Kapsule & Managed Databases

Cluster health checks, pod monitoring, CrashLoopBackOff alerts, node pool updates. Monitoring of managed PostgreSQL/MySQL databases.

What does high availability require at Scaleway?

Two things decide what is achievable, and neither is up to you: a private network between your servers, and a movable public address. The first lets the cluster talk and decide; the second determines whether failover is visible from outside — and how fast.

Private network: VPC and RPN

VPC Private Networks cover Instances and Elastic Metal servers — Scaleway even publishes an official tutorial for a Proxmox cluster on Elastic Metal using that feature. On the Dedibox range, RPN v2 provides layer 2 with a free addressing plan and, importantly for us, no MAC address restriction.

Public address: Flexible and Failover IPs

Managed independently of the machine and attachable or detachable on the fly. On Dedibox, a Failover IP paired with a virtual MAC address moves from one server to another, including across datacenters.

No MAC filtering changes everything

VRRP works by claiming a virtual MAC address: wherever a provider filters MAC addresses, the mechanism is blocked. RPN v2 does not filter, which makes failover within one to three seconds possible on private addressing — exactly the behaviour described at level 2 of our architectures.

Two things to check during scoping

  • An address stays tied to its product category. A Failover IP moves from one Dedibox to another, never to an Elastic Metal server or a load balancer. Build that into the addressing plan from the start, not afterwards.
  • The exact behaviour of public addressing inside the private network is validated case by case depending on the range chosen. We test it before committing to a failover time — we do not infer it from documentation.

Going further: the four architectures we deploy are compared by failover time and cost on our managed high availability page. How VRRP works and how we pick the tool are covered in keepalived or Pacemaker.

Our recommendation: Proxmox VE on your Scaleway server

As part of our managed server service, we recommend installing Proxmox VE (free, open-source) on your dedicated Scaleway server. Proxmox VE can be installed on Elastic Metal via the Scaleway custom ISO.

  • Native PBS backup: automatic VM backup to NimbusBackup, off-site at Equinix Paris — included in your management contract
  • Snapshots before every update: instant rollback if something goes wrong, with no downtime
  • Service isolation: each application in its own VM, no domino effect in case of a breach
  • Live migration: move a VM from one server to another without downtime (useful when changing Scaleway tiers)
  • No licensing cost: Proxmox VE is 100% open-source, unlike VMware. Proxmox support subscriptions are available and recommended for business-critical environments.

Already running Proxmox VE on your server? Perfect, NimbusBackup integration is immediate. Running bare Linux/Windows? We handle the migration to Proxmox VE as part of onboarding.

Server management, administration, operations: what each word covers

Depending on who you ask, the same work is called managed services, server management, server administration, operations or maintenance in operational condition. These are not five offers: they are five ways of naming distinct acts, which we perform on your Scaleway servers at different frequencies and under different commitments.

The table below gives, for each term, the actual act, its frequency and the plan that covers it. This is the scope we sign.

Term used What we actually do Frequency Plan
Monitoring
supervision
CPU, RAM, disk fill level, network, application services and TLS certificate expiry — on a Cloud Instance as much as on Elastic Metal. Every alert goes into PagerDuty. Continuous — 7am-10pm 7 days a week on Essential, 24/7/365 on Pro and Critical All three
Preventive maintenance OS and package updates, CVE remediation, log rotation and cleanup, certificate renewal, heading off disk saturation before it happens Monthly cycle, plus critical CVEs handled off-cycle All three — drawn from your included or prepaid hours
Corrective maintenance Diagnosis and service restoration after an incident: a stopped service, a full partition, abnormal load, an Elastic Metal that will not reboot and has to be taken over in rescue mode On event, within a 4h response time (GTI) on Pro, 1h on Critical All three — drawn from your included or prepaid hours
Server administration The changes you ask for: accounts and keys, vhosts, firewall rules and Security Groups, certificates, attaching Block Storage, opening a flow inside the VPC On request, scheduled with you 1 hour per month included on Pro and Critical, then €120 excl. VAT per hour billed in 30-minute steps — you are warned before you go over
Operations Backups pushed off-site to our Proxmox Backup Server at Equinix Paris, outside Scaleway infrastructure, and restores actually replayed on a randomly picked machine, with the report handed to you Daily backup; restore test once per half-year up to five machines, once per quarter beyond that All three — capacity varies by plan
L2 / L3 support There is no level 1 here: your request reaches a systems engineer directly, with no qualification script in between. Hardware replacement on an Elastic Metal and physical work in the datacenter remain Scaleway's job. We open the ticket on your behalf from your console and follow it through to service restoration. Email and member portal during business hours; PagerDuty for a confirmed production outage All three

Maintenance is counted in hours, not in acts. Keeping a server in operational condition is capped by a volume of hours: those included in your plan, those you have prepaid, or those billed beyond. In practice, one hour per server per month covers routine needs — that is the volume included in the Pro and Critical plans. Beyond it, the hour is billed at €120 excl. VAT in 30-minute steps, and we tell you before you go over rather than after.

This scope is identical on a Cloud Instance, an Elastic Metal or a Dedibox: it is engineering time, not a percentage of what the machine costs. It applies just as much to a server we install as to taking over an existing server already in production and still held in your own name — see what you keep and how you get us out.

Incident triggering via PagerDuty

In case of a confirmed production outage, you trigger an incident via PagerDuty (credentials provided upon contract signing). Our on-call team is alerted immediately.

Legitimate incident:

  • Server unreachable
  • Critical service down
  • Ongoing data loss
  • Suspected security breach

Not an incident — use email:

  • Non-urgent technical question
  • Planned change request
  • Minor slowness with no business impact

Abusive triggering outside of production outages: 100 EUR excl. VAT per incident. This measure ensures on-call availability for genuine emergencies.

Your backups should not be at Scaleway

If your backups are on the same server or the same hosting provider as your production environment, an incident (ransomware, datacenter failure, human error) destroys both at the same time.

With your RDEM management contract, a managed offsite PBS volume is included: your Proxmox VMs are automatically backed up to our Equinix Paris infrastructure, physically separate from Scaleway.
